Getting to Know Mrs. Claxton
In case you were wondering, that's ME in the picture above! I am a certified diving and this picture is in the Caribbean off the island of Roatan, Honduras. I lived and taught there for about a year and got to experience the sea like never before! This was a shipwreck called El Aguila about 110 ft deep! I also enjoying reading, being in nature, hiking, and hanging with my family.
Educational Background:
I have taught five years in North Carolina as a middle school teacher and one year abroad in Honduras as a 5th grade teacher. I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts and 6th and 7th Social Studies. I attended Appalachian State University and received my Bachelor's in 2009 in Middle Grades Education, as well as attended Gardner-Webb University and received my Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction in 2016. I moved to the Raleigh area last year and am enjoying the city! I moved from the western part of the state in Mount Airy, NC. Therefore, Wendell will be a similar hometown feel for my family!
Family Background:
In 2015 my husband and I were married in my hometown Statesville, NC. I have a 3 year-old step son and 2 adorable cats. My other immediate family resides in North and South Carolina. I love getting time to visit my sister, mom, or dad as often as I can. I have a 8 year-old niece who is going on 13! Family is an important aspect in my life and we all try to make effort to get together and just relax together! My husband and I's favorite thing to do together is hang in our ENO Hammocks and longboard around a lake (even though I haven't mastered it yet!). I have a passion to read and teach which stems from my family. My mom just retired as a teacher and my sister's writing/reading love lead her to journalism, teaching English/Reading, and eventually digital marketing. Reading for most people and myself can be a great escape and stress relief for any day of the week! My 3 favorite adolescent literature books are House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and Freak, the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.
Current Teaching Hopes:
This is my second year at Wendell Middle School. I'm excited to be teaching again on the Red Wolves team this year!
To incorporate the 21st century skills, I use goal setting, collaboration, communication, and group work to create a community of active learners! My hope for students is to build life-skills such as public speaking and learning to work together in my English Language Arts classes! Reading novels and nonfiction articles, we will be working on writing, reflections, annotations, and becoming experts through class discussions and critical analyzers of texts. I will teach the Common Core Reading and Writing Standards for North Carolina to empower students to actively engage with text and read for mastery!
